This presentation will detail a collaborative undergraduate research project developed
by Kristen Mahan (digital marketing senior, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh) under the guidance of Dr. Maria Novotny (University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Dept. of English/The ART of Infertility).
While infertility impacts 12% of individuals who are of reproductive age in the U.S., most targeted infertility campaigns – educational resources and support systems – are marketed at women. Despite this statistic, it is estimated that one-third of infertility cases are the result of male reproductive issues, one-third a result of female reproductive issues, and one-third either a combination of both sexes or unexplained.
This research project aimed to understand the needs of infertile men and how to support them through a social media campaign created and run by Kristen. Men were later surveyed about the effectiveness of the campaign. During the talk, Kristen and Maria will describe the design of the study, the results, and the implications. It is hoped that this presentation will highlight contemporary issues facing the infertility community as well as open up conversations about how to address the needs infertile men have.
