There are so many things that are out of control when it comes to your family-building journey. You can’t control how your body responds to treatment. You can’t make implantation occur. You can’t control unsolicited comments people say about your decisions on how you choose to build your family. You can’t control how much your clinic charges for an IVF. You can’t control the length of the two-week wait. The list goes on and on.
My battle with unexplained infertility was long and difficult, and it spanned a decade of my life. I endured countless testing, ten rounds of IUI, seven IVFs, and transferred 40 embryos to have our one and only child.
I could have put my difficult journey in a box, but instead, I decided to turn my pain into purpose. It took six years and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but I finally published a book about my journey and the journeys of nine other dear friends of mine whom I met through RESOLVE of Greater San Diego. I realized that sharing stories can make a huge positive impact on someone else facing infertility. I volunteered to participate in my first ever Federal Advocacy Day, where we lobbied Congress for pro-family building legislation. In addition, I started leading monthly national and local general infertility support groups. In 2019, I co-founded the annual Detroit, MI Walk of Hope to raise awareness around the disease of infertility and bring the infertility community together. No one should have to walk this journey alone. In 2021, I started my monthly Pregnancy and Parenting After Infertility Group (PAIGES). I also enjoy gifting all the members of my group with nursery paintings I create to welcome their “miracle babies” into the world.
There are so many things #WeCanALL do, even when so much is out of our control. When you are feeling alone and desperate, here is a list of things #WeCanALL do. Capitalizing on what we can do instead of what we can’t is incredibly empowering and can lift one’s spirits.
*Join a RESOLVE support group. No one needs to go through this journey alone.
*If you cannot find a support group, start a support group in your area.
*Volunteer to return calls on the RESOLVE Helpline. Helping others is extremely therapeutic.
*Participate in Federal Advocacy Day. Having your voice heard is incredibly empowering.
*Join a letter-writing campaign to your Senators and Representatives. Together our voices will make a difference.
*Participate in a Walk of Hope or start a Walk of Hope in your area. The people you will meet on your journey are amazing warriors and may become lifelong friends.
*Make a donation to RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Your donation helps to provide FREE support groups, programs, and affordable access to care.
*Share your personal story. You never know how your story can positively impact another person’s life and give them the hope they need to carry on.
#WeCanALL make a difference in the lives of others and turn our pain into purpose.
